Tools You’ll Need
The right tools make all the difference in quilting. Here are some essentials to ensure accuracy and ease:
✔️ Rotary Cutter & Self-Healing Mat – For clean, precise cuts every time.
✔️ Quilting Ruler – Essential for measuring and cutting fabric pieces accurately.
✔️ 1/4" Seam Guide or Tape – Helps maintain a perfect 1/4” seam allowance.
✔️ Quilting Clips or Pins – To keep your fabric pieces in place while sewing.
✔️ Spray Starch – To really get the wrinkles out of your fabric but also make the fabric sturdier and easy to sew with.
✔️ Fabric Bundle – A pre-coordinated set of fabrics takes the guesswork out of choosing colours but this also make a fantastic scrap buster project.

Techniques Used in This Project
This project is a fantastic way to practice key quilting skills! Here are a few techniques you’ll use:
🔹 Chain Piecing – Instead of stopping and cutting thread between each piece, you continuously feed fabric pieces through the machine. This speeds up the process and keeps things efficient. You can check out my video on chain piecing (153) Rotary Cutters: Common Problems and How to Fix Them | Beginner Quilting Tips - YouTube

🔹 Seam Allowance Accuracy – A consistent 1/4” seam allowance ensures your patchwork pieces align perfectly. Using a seam guide or a special presser foot can help. If you're sewing machine doesn't have a 1/4" presser foot, I highly recommend investing in one. You can also use seam tape.
🔹 Pressing for Precision – Pressing your seams correctly (either open or to one side) helps reduce bulk and improves the overall look of your finished quilt top. I find using a wool pressing mat super helpful.
Top Tips for Success
Want to avoid common beginner mistakes? Here are a few expert tips to help you make a flawless Patchwork Love Hearts Wall Hanging:
💡 Starch Your Fabric – Lightly starching your fabric before cutting can prevent stretching and distortion, leading to crisper seams. I recommend Mary Ellen's Best Press Spray Starch. Once you've tried starching, I bet you'll never stop.
💡 Test Your Seam Allowance – Sew two small fabric scraps together and measure - if it’s not exactly 1/4”, adjust before starting your project!
💡 Stay Organized – Lay out all your pieces in advance to avoid mix-ups and keep your colours balanced.

💡 Enjoy the Process! – Quilting is all about creativity and joy, don’t stress over tiny imperfections!
