Changing the needle on your sewing machine is a crucial step in keeping your sewing machine in the best condition and help it last longer.
Let me tell you how....
A dull or damaged needle can cause a variety of issues, from skipped stitches to broken thread, and can damage your fabric. A new needle is sharp and straight, ensuring that it can pierce through the fabric and create a clean stitch. Sewing with a dull or damaged needle can cause the fabric to pucker, snag and generally make it less enjoyable for you.
It is important to change the needle regularly to ensure good stitching quality and prevent damage to your fabric.
A dull or damaged needle can cause your sewing machine's motor to work harder to push the needle through the fabric, which can wear out your machine's motor faster. In contrast, a new needle glides smoothly through the fabric, requiring less force from the motor, and prolonging the lifespan of your machine. By changing your needle regularly, you can help ensure your machine lasts for many years to come.
So how often should you change your needle...?
I suggest every 2-3 bobbins (which is probably around 6 hours or stitching). This a great guide. But really - as soon as you feel your sewing machine is not functioning as well as it should, or just feels a bit "off" - just switch it out sooner.
I hope this has helped - and if you would like more ideas and tips to keep your sewing machine in tip top condition (and avoid those expensive repair shop expenses), check out the guides section here on my website and the ebook called HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR SEWING MACHINE. It is packed!
