How to Cut Fabric for Quilting (Without Losing Your Mind!)

Cutting fabric might not be as exciting as sewing your blocks together, but it’s one of the most important parts of quilting, especially when you’re just starting out. If you’re wondering how to cut fabric for your quilts accurately, you’re in the right place.

It sounds simple, but cutting your fabric the right way can save you from so much frustration later on. Trust me, wonky seams, misaligned blocks, and “why doesn’t this fit?!” moments often come down to one thing: inaccurate cutting.

Let me walk you through a few things I wish someone had told me when I first started quilting. These beginner rotary cutting tips will help you get it right from the very beginning.

1. Always Iron Your Fabric First

Wrinkled fabric is harder to measure accurately and can cause your cuts to be slightly off, without you even noticing.

Always iron your fabric before you start cutting.

I absolutely recommend starching your fabric. Perhaps I will write a separate blog all about the methods I use and the products I recommend. You must NOT starch pre-cuts though - anything smaller than a fat quarter.

The product I am using right now is this one Spray Starch.

Even though it feels like an extra step, ironing your fabric before cutting makes a noticeable difference and saves you time in the long run.

2. Use a Long Quilting Ruler

One of the biggest beginner mistakes when cutting fabric for quilting is using a ruler that’s too short.

I made this mistake myself, I bought a small 8 inch square ruler and attempted to cut larger pieces of fabric. Having to move the ruler each time to make a longer cut, was not ideal especially for pieces around width of fabric wide - 40-42 inches wide.

That meant I had to shift the ruler halfway through each cut, which threw off the accuracy. I definitely recommend investing in a 24 inch ruler.

Creative Grids is my go-to ruler brand. I have this ruler.

You’ll use it for nearly every quilting project, and it makes cutting width-of-fabric strips so much easier and more precise.

3. Cut Using Your Quilting Ruler - Not Your Cutting Mat

This is a super common beginner misunderstanding: lining up your fabric with the lines on your cutting mat instead of the lines on your ruler.

Cutting from the mat might seem easier, but it’s less accurate.

Rulers are specifically designed for precision, and when you’re cutting long strips like 2½ inch x WOF (width of fabric) piece, you’ll get much more consistent results using the ruler as your guide.

4. Keep Your Rotary Cutter Blade Sharp

A dull blade won’t just make cutting harder, it can also lead to jagged, uneven edges that mess with your seam allowance later. If your rotary cutter is skipping threads or not slicing cleanly through the fabric, it’s time to change the blade.

It might feel like you’re being frugal by using a blade for as long as possible, but replacing it when needed will make cutting fabric so much faster and more accurate.

I have a range of rotary cutters but I do find myself loving to use my Fiskars Rotary Cutters.

5. Limit the Number of Fabric Layers

Stacking too many layers of fabric to cut all at once might feel like a timesaver, but it can actually lead to inaccurate cuts, especially for beginners.

Fabric can shift slightly between layers, and even the pressure of the ruler and cutter can distort things.

I usually stick to cutting no more than 3 layers at a time. It’s a nice balance between speed and accuracy. But if you are a beginner, my advice is to cut one layer at a time.

Oh and the phrase "measure twice, cut once" is one to live by when it comes to cutting fabric.

Bonus Tip: Practice on Clearance Fabric

If you’re brand new to quilting and have never used a rotary cutter before, grab some clearance fabric from your local shop and just practice.

I actually cut into old clothes that I no longer wanted. Cutting fabric takes a bit of muscle memory and confidence, and the more you do it, the better it gets.

Final Thoughts: Cutting Fabric the Right Way Sets You Up for Quilting Success

If you’re learning how to make your first quilt, accurate fabric cutting is one of the most important skills to develop. It might not be the most glamorous part of quilting, but getting it right saves you so much stress later on.

And don’t worry, we all make cutting mistakes.

The important thing is to learn from them, reset, and try again.

You’ve got this!
